Alabama is raising the bar for school board members. In an article entitled New Law would change school board candidate qualifications it is apparent that the significance of the role of school boards is being recognized.
This article states that
lawmakers passed the School Board Governance Improvement Act, raising training requirements and standards.
This affects anyone who wants to be a school board member. The expectations for a code of conduct just got higher.
In a nutshell, the law restates the duties and responsibility of the school board members. It requires the state board to adopt a unified code of conduct and have school boards follow it by next spring semester.
School board members will have to step up training requirements.
One of the associated concerns is that it gives the superintendent (CEO) the ability to dismiss board members who do not follow the code of conduct. “Critics said this is taking control out of the voters’ hands who put the board member in office and back to those in power.”
