Do you have negative people in your life? Do you meet negative strangers every single day? Are there a lot of bad hair days for you or you just don’t feel like it? If so, it is essential to recognize when the negativity is your own and when it belongs to another person.
My friend, Cynthia, sent me this story today. I don’t know the source, but I thought it was worth sharing it with you.
We Carry Negativity
Oftentimes, we do not realize that we are carrying around negativity. We take things in stride, or so we think. When little things are said or done, we feel irritated but we let them slide. In the future, when other things are said or done, we also let them slide.
This negative energy keeps on building because it is unresolved. Sooner or later, the weight of this negativity gets discharged and it’s usually in the wrong places.
Have you ever heard the saying, “The straw that broke the camel’s back?” Well, it is like that. Something happens, and our bodies and minds can’t carry the weight anymore. We just let go.
It may come out in the form of irritation, tears, angry comments, sarcasm or sadness. As we’ve taken in others’ negativity, our systems can’t handle it anymore. Knowing this, what can we do?
Recognize the Source and Let Go
We cannot solve other people’s issues. They have to do that themselves. We cannot force them to resolve situations they do not want to solve.
What we can do is:
- Acknowledge when an issue is your own or if it belongs to someone else.
- Refrain from absorbing another person’s negativity.
- Practice ways to release negative energy, such as engaging in some form of physical exercise, writing journals, talking to a friend or a personal coach, or meditating.
Your Next Step
Slowly scan your body to see if you are holding negative energy anywhere. Reflect whether it is your energy or whether it is negative energy you have absorbed from someone else.
Determine how you can resolve the situation. If it is another person’s energy, take the time to release it.
