Introduction
As we proceed through life we have very little reason to look at our culture if we remain in the same environment. If we venture to new places or new cultures are introduced into our environment, then things change. 
We need to be able to ask questions in four areas:
- Cultural upbringing
- Other cultures
- Bridging techniques
- How culture impedes or enhances specific relationships.
The questions listed below are not designed to be all inclusive. The intent is to provide the reader with sufficient questions to begin to understand what he has taken for granted for many years.
Cultural upbringing
What do I believe about the roles of different genders or age groups?
What phrases are considered acceptable but might offend others if they did not understand my slang?
What mannerisms do I consider acceptable but may be considered offensive in another setting?
What do I believe about dress that might be different from what others of different cultures might believe?
What do I believe about access to programs, services, jobs and promotions? Do I believe in equal access?
What do I consider to be dignified treatment of others?
What do I believe about openness and honesty? Are there specific topics which are not discussed in open or with individuals of specific genders or ages?
What do I consider to be acceptable treatment of others?
Are my living standards the same as the standards of others?
Are my beliefs about justice different from those in my environment?
What do I believe about another person’s right to self-determination?
What are the parameters of confidentiality in my culture?
How do I define fairness?
Other cultures
What do other cultures believe about gender or the role of various age groups?
What phrases are considered acceptable/unacceptable in other cultures?
What mannerisms are acceptable and unacceptable in other cultures?
What do other cultures believe about dress?
What do other cultures believe about access to programs, services, jobs and promotions? Do they believe in equal access?
What do other cultures consider to be dignified treatment of others?

Bridging techniques
What are the things I can do to meet others half-way?
What are the phrases I need to use to demonstrate understanding or empathy?
How am I expected to dress in specific settings?
How is one expected to address negative concerns?
Do I need to introduce new information within the context of the other person’s existing framework?
What conditions need to exist before a person from another culture will disclose critical information?
What non-verbal behaviours could make or break the exchange?
How do I get my thinking from where I am to where that person is and how do I demonstrate that I hear their point of view?
What do I need to disclose about my culture in order to meet another person halfway?
How do I communicate information in a caring, kind, respectful manner?
How do I demonstrate that the other person has my full attention and I am not rushing the interaction?
How culture impedes or enhances specific relationships
What beliefs am I unwilling to consider changing?
What behaviours am I willing/unwilling to modify?
What dress codes are essential to my being?
Are there any behaviours which are considered anti-social or exclusionary in this context?
What automatic behaviours could sabotage an exchange and how can I keep those behaviours in check during an exchange?
Are there words I use in a different way from others in this context which I need to change in order to preserve this relationship or continue to function in this environment?
How is my timing different from those in my current environment and how would this affect my strategies?
